What is an MRI scan?
WHAT IS MRI?
Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) is a medical imaging technique that uses powerful magnetic fields and radio-frequencies to obtain very detailed cross-sectional images of the brain. DOES AN MRI SCAN REQUIRE ANY PREPARATION? There are certain things that may preclude certain people from having an MRI scan. You will also be required to complete an MRI safety questionnaire before the scan so that we can check if you are eligible. You can assist us on the day by not wearing any clothing that has metal fastenings; not wearing any jewellery, and removing all eye make-up. These are all things that can interfere with scans of the head. If you wear glasses, please bring your prescription with you - we will provide you with MRI safe glasses for you to wear during your scan. Alternatively, you can wear contacts. CAN ANYONE HAVE AN MRI SCAN? No. There are some preconditions which can make MRI scanning hazardous. Due to the powerful magnetic fields used for MRI, any person with a pacemaker, metal clips on arteries or certain implanted devices cannot have an MRI scan. Women who are pregnant or breast feeding cannot have an MRI scan. It is also advisable for some people with specific medical conditions not to have a scan. These conditions will be rigorously screened for during your pre-assessment for MRI scanning. |
What is oxytocin?
Oxytocin is a brain hormone that gets released from the brain in social situations. Recent evidence has suggested that oxytocin that is administered via nasal spray can help reduce levels of stress or anxiety, as well as assist in social and emotional behaviours including the recognition of emotions in facial expressions. Moreover, studies have shown that these changes can be observed in the brain after only a single dose of oxytocin.
For this reason this study being undertaken will examine the effects of oxytocin on the brains response to social stimuli involving facial expressions. We will administer a single dose of an oxytocin nasal spray and a single dose of a placebo nasal spray. |
What are the benefits of the research project?
Participants will be financially reimbursed to cover any costs they may incur as a result of participating in this research by the psychology department at ACU. There are no immediate benefits to participants. However, the study will provide the researchers with a better understanding of age-related social and emotional changes and will assist researchers in exploring the role of oxytocin related changes.
Where will the assessments take place?
All assessments will be conducted at the Advanced Technology Centre at Swinburne University of Technology in Hawthorn, Victoria.
